Open State Planex Tour
As the scope for design thinking intersects with disciplines such as economics, health, science, ecology and technology, the organisers behind Open State asked – what does design value and how do we value design?
March 20th - 24th Planex participated in Open State, a brand new initiative led by Open House Melbourne as part of the Melbourne Design Week 2017 hosted by Creative Victoria and NGV.
The Open House program explores the value of good design over a ten-day, city-wide celebration providing workshops, talks by leading designers, industry events at NGV and partner venues throughout Melbourne. Well known buildings not usually available to the public open their doors for free public tours.
Linking creativity with business Open State's first year welcomed members of the local community to journey behind the scenes of Victoria’s most iconic buildings. Residents, visitors, design buffs and architecture fans were invited to explore key contemporary, historic and sustainable sites located in and around Melbourne's suburbs.
Planex invited members of the community to explore our design process and meet the designers and the people who make our furniture. Owner Jean-Pierre Jardel showcased the production of a locker base from sheet metal to dispatch to explain how our manufacturing facility incorporates the use of innovative automation to turn recycled steel metal into a finished product.
Designed by Inarc Architects and winner of the RAIA ‘Best Commercial Building 2004’, Planex's 7000m2 purpose built factory utilises solar and LED and has become a benchmark for Australian manufacturing.
Visitors were taken on a journey through the prototyping showroom, pre-press, steel punching line, powder coat line, finishing area, dispatch and R&D department followed by a Q&A session.
Staff shared stories spanning the 40+ year history of the family owned business. With discussions ranging from our commitment to designed-in longevity with the ability to reuse, reconfigure and recycle to supporting the future of Australian manufacturing and patenting designs.
Planex wishes to warmly thank everyone who attended the Open State program for their support and participation. A special thanks also to the organisers at Open House, Creative Victoria and The National Gallery of Victoria for putting together such a wonderful program for Melbourne Design Week 2017.
