Inside the HERB Building, University of Newcastle

Adaptive reuse and human-centred design for collaborative learning.

The University of Newcastle’s Health Education Research Building (HERB) transforms a multistorey carpark into a state-of-the-art learning environment – merging adaptive reuse, collaboration, and sustainability.

Designed by EJE Architecture, the project accommodates the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Health Sciences, and College of Health, Medicine & Wellbeing. Planex’s xLocker2 system was specified to provide durable, visually cohesive storage for both staff and students.

Custom finishes in Pale Eucalypt and Claypot complement the interior palette, while RFID-enabled lockers align with the University’s transition to hot-desking and digital access control.

The HERB Building sets a benchmark for sustainable tertiary design – proving that adaptive reuse and human-centred planning can deliver spaces that support both people and planet.
