Project: QUT Kelvin Grove
Practice: Wilson Architects & Blaklash Studio
Location: Brisbane, Queensland
Planex products: xLocker2 System
Lock technology: Gallagher Smart Reader
As part of QUT’s ongoing commitment to embedding First Nations perspectives into campus environments, the Kelvin Grove refurbishment reflects a strong connection to country and community. Wilson Architects, in collaboration with Blaklash – a First Nations-led creative agency dedicated to country-centred design worked closely with the QUT Indigenous Procurement Panel to integrate a powerful visual statement into the student facilities.
Renowned artists Ailsa Walsh, a Yuggera (Ipswich/Brisbane), Lardil (Mornington Island), and Kullilli (Thargomindah) woman, created Bird Wings, a vibrant artwork symbolising identity, movement, and cultural continuity. The design was custom-applied to Planex’s xLocker2 system, transforming everyday storage into a canvas that celebrates Indigenous culture and storytelling.
This collaboration exemplifies the role of design in fostering respect, visibility, and inclusivity for First Nations peoples. With the addition of Gallagher Smart Reader technology, the lockers deliver not only cultural significance but also secure, future-ready functionality.
